What is the Management Consortium?
The Management Consortium is a convenient, flexible way to develop the skills of your supervisors, managers, and professionals in a broad variety of areas at an economical price. Member businesses and organizations annually identify and prioritize common managerial and supervisory development needs. A full-day workshop is then designed around each of the identified topics. The workshops are facilitated primarily by UNI faculty; these faculty members are carefully selected because of their expertise in providing interactive and activity-based development that is relevant and practical for today's business environment. Participants benefit from a vigorous learning environment that is created by the interaction among supervisors and managers from a variety of manufacturing and service industries from more than 20 businesses and organizations.
What are the benefits of membership?
1) A Voice. You have direct input into the topics that are offered each year based on your individual needs and interests.
2) Flexibility. You can select which workshops employees attend. For example, you can send 10 people to one workshop or one person to multiple workshops. If you need more than 10 seats, you can buy additional seats at preferred member discount rate.
3) Convenience. Each workshop is offered twice each year to accommodate employees' and businesses' work schedules.
4) Affordable. Membership allows the Executive Development Center to offer workshops at a lower cost. The annual membership fee is $2,049.

Membership allows your organization access to the University of Northern Iowa’s intellectual capital. Again in 2008, The Princeton Review ranked UNI as one of the top business schools in the nation stating, “the university is dedicated to offering course work that addresses current issues in business.” Part of the University’s mission is service to Iowa and as such, the Executive Development Center is charged with extending the intellectual capital of the university to the business community.
Consortium workshops are facilitated primarily by UNI faculty and professional staff. Our facilitators are carefully selected because of their expertise in the subject area, and their ability to develop and conduct interactive engaging classes that are rich with relevant and practical content.
Participants benefit from a vigorous learning environment by interacting with their peers who come from a variety of businesses and organizations. To ensure a return on your investment, participants are challenged to design a plan of action resulting from the content and tools gained from the workshop. They are then charged to apply what was learned to manage current issues they are confronted with on the job.
Where, when and how are workshops scheduled?
The workshops are held on UNI's campus in the Business and Community Services Building, room 30. Two sessions of every workshop are offered during the year.
Enrollment is limited to 25 participants to allow active participation in the workshop.

Changes in registration are accepted up to three business days before the workshop. Consortium member no-shows, those who do not cancel or those who do not transfer without advance notice, are charged the full rate.
How can participants earn a certificate?
The Executive Development Center awards a Management Skills and Knowledge certificate to participants who attend eight or more workshops throughout the calendar year. The certificate program provides participants with an opportunity to build a strong foundation of basic skills they need to be effective managers and professionals in their organization.
What does it cost to be a member of the consortium?
The membership rate is $2049. Membership entitles the organization to 10 seats in any of the consortium workshops for the year. Additional seats can be purchased for $179 per person. Non-consortium members can purchase seats to these workshops at $249. Plus, there is a $25 non-refundable deposit per participant for non-consortium members. Fees include training materials, parking pass, continental breakfast, lunch and snacks. The above rates are good through January 31, 2010.
2010 Prices
2010 Consortium Membership for 10 seats will be $1999 for ten seats. Additional seats, over ten, will be $175 per seat.
For the first time, a 5 seat membership will be offered to non-profit organizations (any size) and smaller businesses with less than 25 employees for $1175. Additional seats, over five, will be $220 per seat.
Added Bonus: Save an additional 5% if we receive your payment by January 16, 2010.
Cost without a membership is $275 per seat.
What financial aid is available?
There are two sources worth investigating.
1. This program qualifies for most business’ tuition reimbursement programs. Ask your Human Resources contact for more details about this employee benefit.
2. Also, if a business is retraining their employees or expanding their workforce, they may be eligible for Iowa Jobs Training Programs 260E and 260F funds. Eligible businesses must be located in or will be relocating to Iowa; have customers outside Iowa (only for service providers); and be involved in manufacturing, processing, assembling products, warehousing, wholesaling or conducting R&D. In the current economic situation, it has been difficult for many employers to find funds to hire and train employees. However, businesses that utilize professional training institutions, such as UNI’s Executive Development Center, may qualify for funding to train managers and other company leaders. The 260F funding option is available through Iowa’s 15 community colleges for employers looking to enhance their employees’ leadership and managerial skills. State community colleges administer the process but the funds can be used at state colleges and universities. Call 319-277-2490 at Hawkeye Community College to see if your company is eligible.

How long does it take to complete a certificate program?
One certificate program can be earned in approximate 4 months. Each program involves approximately 58 hours of instruction. The Business Management and the Leadership Development Certificate Programs are offered at different times in the year so you are able to complete the Business Management Certificate program first and advance into the Leadership Development Program. If you enroll in both certificate programs back to back, you will receive a 15% discount.
What if I'm unable to complete all the required classes this year?
There is a great benefit to completing all the classes in sequence, in one year as the classes are structured to build a learning progression. However, if you aren't able to complete all the classes, you can attend the missed class(es) the next time the certificate program is offered, or sometimes a make up assignment can substitute for the class subject to approval by the Program manager of the Executive Development Center.
Do I have to pay in full when the certificate program begins, or can I pay as the program progresses?
- We request full payment before or on the day of the first class.
- You can pay by credit card or check.
- People who enrolled but didn't attend the class, or canceled their registration less than three business days in advance will be charged a $25 fee.
- Membership seats expire after the last scheduled workshop for that year.
What if I missed the deadline?
If you missed the enrollment deadline for the certificate program, we advise that you enroll the next time the program is offered. The programs are designed around a cohort-based learning model so the same group of people builds upon their learning experiences together.
